2. PROCESS MANAGEMENT

Process Management in Operating Systems

Process management is one of the core functions of an operating system (OS). It involves the handling of processes, including their creation, scheduling, and termination. Processes are fundamental to any operating system because they represent the execution of a program, which involves the use of system resources such as CPU, memory, and I/O devices.

1. What is a Process?

A process is a program in execution. It consists of:

  • Code: The instructions that need to be executed.
  • Data: Variables and data that the program manipulates.
  • Program Counter: A register that holds the address of the next instruction.
  • Stack: Holds temporary data such as method/function parameters, return addresses, and local variables.
  • Heap: Dynamic memory that is used during the process's execution.

2. Process State

A process can be in one of the following states:

  • New: The process is being created.
  • Ready: The process is waiting to be assigned to a processor.
  • Running: Instructions are being executed.
  • Waiting: The process is waiting for some event (such as I/O completion) to occur.
  • Terminated: The process has finished execution.

3. Process Control Block (PCB)

Every process is represented by a Process Control Block (PCB) in the OS. The PCB contains information about the process including:

  • Process ID (PID): Unique identifier for the process.
  • Process State: The current state of the process.
  • Program Counter: The address of the next instruction to execute.
  • CPU Registers: Values of the CPU registers for the process.
  • Memory Management Information: Information about the memory allocated to the process.

4. Process Scheduling

Scheduling is the method by which processes are given access to system resources, primarily the CPU. The scheduler determines which process runs at a given time.

  • Scheduler Types:

    • Long-Term Scheduler: Decides which processes are admitted to the ready queue (job scheduling).
    • Short-Term Scheduler: Decides which process will execute next (CPU scheduling).
    • Medium-Term Scheduler: May temporarily swap out processes from memory (to disk) to optimize system performance (swapping).
  • Scheduling Algorithms:

    • First-Come, First-Served (FCFS): Processes are executed in the order they arrive.
    • Shortest Job Next (SJN): The process with the smallest execution time is selected next.
    • Round Robin (RR): Each process is assigned a fixed time slice (quantum), and processes are executed in a circular queue.
    • Priority Scheduling: Each process is assigned a priority, and the CPU is allocated to the process with the highest priority.

Each process gets a fixed time slice (quantum). If a process is not completed within its time slice, it is placed at the back of the queue.

5. Context Switching

When the CPU switches from executing one process to another, it performs a context switch. During this process:

  • The OS saves the current state of the process (the contents of the CPU registers, the program counter, etc.) in its PCB.
  • The OS loads the saved state of the new process into the CPU.
  • This allows the CPU to resume execution from where the new process left off.

Context switching introduces some overhead since it takes time to save and load the state of processes.

6. Process Synchronization

In systems with multiple processes running concurrently, processes may need to share resources. Process synchronization is the technique used to ensure that processes do not interfere with each other when accessing shared resources.

  • Critical Section: A part of the code where a process accesses shared resources.
  • Mutual Exclusion: Only one process at a time can execute in the critical section.
  • Semaphores: A synchronization tool used to manage access to the critical section.

Only one process can be in the Critical Section (CS) at any time to avoid conflicts.

7. Inter-Process Communication (IPC)

Processes often need to communicate with each other, especially in multitasking environments. Inter-Process Communication (IPC) provides mechanisms for data exchange between processes.

  • Shared Memory: Processes share a memory space to exchange information.
  • Message Passing: Processes communicate by sending and receiving messages (e.g., pipes, sockets).

8. Process Creation and Termination

  • Process Creation: A process can create a new process using system calls like fork() (in UNIX). The process that creates another is called the parent, and the newly created process is the child.

Process Termination: When a process finishes execution, it is terminated, and its resources are released.

 

 

2.1. deadlock

What is Deadlock in Operating System (OS)?

Every process needs some resources to complete its execution. However, the resource is granted in a sequential order.

  1. The process requests for some resource.
  2. OS grant the resource if it is available otherwise let the process waits.
  3. The process uses it and release on the completion.

A Deadlock is a situation where each of the computer process waits for a resource which is being assigned to some another process. In this situation, none of the process gets executed since the resource it needs, is held by some other process which is also waiting for some other resource to be released.

Let us assume that there are three processes P1, P2 and P3. There are three different resources R1, R2 and R3. R1 is assigned to P1, R2 is assigned to P2 and R3 is assigned to P3.

After some time, P1 demands for R1 which is being used by P2. P1 halts its execution since it can't complete without R2. P2 also demands for R3 which is being used by P3. P2 also stops its execution because it can't continue without R3. P3 also demands for R1 which is being used by P1 therefore P3 also stops its execution.

In this scenario, a cycle is being formed among the three processes. None of the process is progressing and they are all waiting. The computer becomes unresponsive since all the processes got blocked.

2 Deadlock is an infinite waiting. Starvation is a long waiting but not infinite.

4 The requested resource is blocked by the other process. The requested resource is continuously be used by the higher priority processes.
5 Deadlock happens when Mutual exclusion, hold and wait, No preemption and circular wait occurs simultaneously. It occurs due to the uncontrolled priority and resource management.

Necessary conditions for Deadlocks

  1. Mutual Exclusion

A resource can only be shared in mutually exclusive manner. It implies, if two process cannot use the same resource at the same time.

  1. Hold and Wait

A process waits for some resources while holding another resource at the same time.

  1. No preemption

The process which once scheduled will be executed till the completion. No other process can be scheduled by the scheduler meanwhile.

  1. Circular Wait

All the processes must be waiting for the resources in a cyclic manner so that the last process is waiting for the resource which is being held by the first process.

3. Memory Management Techniques

3.1 Single Contiguous Allocation

In this technique, all processes are loaded into a single continuous section of memory. There’s only one process in memory at a time, leading to inefficiency.

3.2 Fixed Partitioning

Memory is divided into fixed-sized partitions. Each partition can hold exactly one process. The partition size is defined at system startup.

  • Pros: Easy to implement and manage.
  • Cons: Can lead to internal fragmentation, where memory within a partition is unused.

3.3 Dynamic Partitioning

In dynamic partitioning, memory is allocated dynamically based on process needs. This technique solves internal fragmentation but introduces external fragmentation, where free memory is scattered in small blocks.

  • Pros: More efficient memory utilization.
  • Cons: Susceptible to external fragmentation, which can be mitigated using compaction (reorganizing memory to consolidate free blocks).

3.4 Paging

Paging is a memory management scheme that eliminates external fragmentation by dividing both the physical memory and logical memory into fixed-sized blocks called pages and frames.

  • Pages: Logical divisions of a program.
  • Frames: Corresponding divisions in physical memory. When a program is executed, its pages are loaded into available frames.

3.6 Virtual Memory

Virtual memory is a memory management technique that allows processes to execute even if they are not fully loaded into physical memory. It uses both paging and segmentation mechanisms and relies on disk space (swap space) to extend memory.

  • Demand Paging: Only the needed pages are loaded into memory.
  • Page Replacement Algorithms: If physical memory is full, the OS uses algorithms to swap pages in and out of memory. Common algorithms include:
    • FIFO (First-In-First-Out): Replaces the oldest page.
    • LRU (Least Recently Used): Replaces the least recently accessed page.
    • Optimal: Replaces the page that won’t be used for the longest time (ideal but not practical in real systems).

4. Memory Allocation Strategies

  • First-Fit: Allocates the first block of memory that is large enough for the process.
  • Best-Fit: Allocates the smallest block of memory that is large enough to fit the process (minimizes wasted space).
  • Worst-Fit: Allocates the largest available block (to create a large remainder, in the hope it can be used later).

5. Memory Protection

Memory protection ensures that processes do not interfere with each other’s memory. Some mechanisms include:

  • Base and Limit Registers: Used to define the valid memory addresses a process can access. A process cannot access addresses outside this range.
  • Protection Bits: Set at the page or segment level, indicating the type of access allowed (read, write, or execute).

6. Swapping

Swapping is a process where a process is moved temporarily from main memory to disk (swap space) and then brought back into memory when needed. This is used to optimize memory usage and allow multitasking.

7. Fragmentation

Fragmentation refers to wasted memory space. There are two types:

  • Internal Fragmentation: Occurs when allocated memory blocks are larger than the memory needed by a process, leaving unused space within a partition.
  • External Fragmentation: Occurs when free memory is scattered in small blocks across the system, making it difficult to allocate memory to new processes.

1. Swapping

When the process is to be executed, then that process is taken from secondary memory to stored in RAM.But RAM have limited space so we have to take out and take in the process from RAM time to time. This process is called swapping. The purpose is to make a free space for other processes. And later on, that process is swapped back to the main memory.

The situations in which swapping takes place

  1. The Round Robin algorithm is executing in which the quantum process is supposed to preempt after running for some time. In that case, that process is swapped out, and the new process is swapped in.
  2. When there is a priority assigned to each process, the process with low priority is swapped out, and the higher priority process is swapped in. After its execution, the lower priority process is again swapped in, and this process is so fast that users will not know anything about it.
  3. In the shortest time remaining first algorithm, when the next process(which arrives in the ready queue) has less burst time, then the executing process is preempted.
  4. When a process has to do I/O operations, then that process temporarily swapped out.

It is further divided into two types:

  1. Swap-in: Swap-in means removing a program from the hard disk and putting it back in the RAM. 
  2. Swap-out: Swap-out means removing a program from the RAM and putting it into the hard disk.
